House on Mango Street
It is quite true that I was inspired by the book we’re reading in English to write this strange array of vignettes. The book is called House on Mango Street. By Sandra Cisneros. To be honest, people don’t really like it so far.
“It’s stupid.”
They say.
“What’s the point with the whole hair thing?”
They say.
“I mean, this was written for elementary school children!”
They say.
It kind of makes me angry.
It also makes me sad.
They cannot see the beauty and wisdom beneath the seemingly childish or simple words. My friends are the bumblebees floating from flower to flower, sucking in the nectar in hopes that it is especially sweet. When they are disappointed, they hide what they feel and present the honey to the queen who will hopefully appreciate their hard work. Once they are away, and the queen is pleased, they spit out angry buzzes, clearly annoyed at what they are “forced” to do.
Instead of writing in a journal, I can do this.
It’s probably some of the first work that I haven’t shared with another. Hopefully it will stay that way.
Perhaps if someone were to come across this, they would realize the meaning hidden under all my vignettes and not dismiss it as they did Cisneros’. I also hope that my vignettes will have some meaning to them that will not be apparent, but upon looking closer, it is there.
And then…
perhaps…
I will be able to speak.
